This chaise lounge (along with the other work in this series) is made completely from cork that originates as the waste material from the bottle stopper industry. Cork has tremendous potential to perform in ways unlike any other material, as well as being an environmentally responsible material. This piece shows the material’s ability to bend in two directions simultaneously, creating complex three-dimensional forms laminated from a flat sheet. The pliability of the material allows the user of this lounge to rock gently from side to side or on her back with a great degree of stability. The result is a sensation of floating, weightless and totally supported.

The Relief Chair is part of the "Solid/Surface/Series" collection, which remasters the art of sculpting using digital fabrication and solid, rapidly renewable materials. Upholstery, foam products and finishes are all supplanted with thick sheets of natural wool felt, adhered with non-toxic, water-based adhesives. The Relief Chair's contours invite the user to sit back and relax. The body of the chair is a layered assembly of medium-density wool felt sheets, adhered to each other and sleeved over an internal steel frame. The felt body and frame rest on break-formed stainless steel legs, with a satin finish. The scraps of felt generated during fabrication are reused in other Mickus Projects pieces, such as the Refill Pillow. Currently in the showroom.

The traditional solution for a hammock type chair would be leather or canvas. However, here solution comes from a different industry. The seat is made out of interlinked rubber pieces that are used on boats to secure sails. These pieces are therefore inherently tough, but also flexible and stretch slightly under a person. These pieces are attached to the chair’s frame without any additional hardware. Currently in the showroom.

The central column of these stools, located directly under the spine of the user, is flexible, solid cork while the rest is sliced into. The result is a stool that flexes and pivots under the weight of the user, responding to the smallest of movements. The user’s muscles remain slightly engaged to maintain balance, improving posture and circulation. The production process of the stools is quite rapid and simple, allowing for great degrees of variance in shape and proportion.

A hanger leans against the wall. Red rubber on the bottom creats friction. You can move wooden dowels do hang your stuff in many ways. Holes are made to represent constellation; Cassiopeia, Oreon and the Little bear. Disk seats are turned on a lathe and Upholstered with densed foam by hand. They elevate you from the floor to help people to sit on the ground. In Yoga, when you sit on the floor to meditate, you sit on a wooden or foam block to give some distance between your ankles and botoms to release tention on your knee joints. The extra hard foam is shaped in convex disk to straightens your spine as well. People come in the space. They pick one of the disk seats from a hanger and hang their coats where a seat was. They put their seats on the floor and define their own spot in the space. Currently in the showroom.

Tatum's Lounge is an experimental yet functional chair that explores the structural possibilities of using reclaimed piano keys as a building material. Weighing only 6 pounds the chair can hold 25 times it's weight (150lbs). The name of the piece is a play on the word Lounge, referring both to a place in which jazz piano music is played, and the semi-reclined style of seating. The piece is also an homage to the music of the great Art Tatum, born 1909.

The Conversation Chair is one of the first furniture pieces that got Ana started with her design studio after being selected for exhibition at 100%Design London. Inspired by the old Victorian courting chair, the simple two-seater enables two people to sit facing each other comfortably, which promotes conversation and eye contact. Through the exploration of materials and processes, Ana approached the metal as a material of great strength and perfect flexibility. The results came from, folding, flexing, cutting and bending small pieces of cardboard until the form was born.

Reclaimed Bourbon Barrels, Reclaimed truck springs

The BILGE LOUNGE is made from reclaimed bourbon barrel staves and used truck springs. The Küpe line is crafted from used bourbon barrels from Bardstown, Kentucky, the Bourbon Capital of the world. The barrels are constructed from new white oak and charred on the inside to produce the unique flavor and color of the bourbon. These barrels are only used one time to age bourbon, after which some are sold and shipped to Scotland to make scotch. The remaining barrels are discarded by the distillery and often sold for firewood or planters.While many people have repurposed barrels for other uses, our intent is to work with the material in striking new ways. We begin by dismantling the barrels into to individual pieces, the staves, metal bands, and circular heads. We explore how these parts can work together to create a simple functional design while retaining the individual characteristics and natural colors of the aged wood from the original barrels, thus creating a new vernacular.

The Flow Chair was born from extensive form exploration, trial and error, and pure chance. Using a simple technique of heating plastic to a malleable state and then quickly free forming it by hand, dozens of form studies were created, each evolving slowly into a more dynamic and functional form. The milled surface texture of evenly spaced grooves add bold and graphic definition to the undulating, organic shape. The chair is made from 3form’s Varia Ecoresin, composed of at least 40% post-industrial recycled material. By utilizing 3form’s diverse material choices, the chair’s appearance is emboldened by contrasting surface finishes and textile laminations.

In the tradition of Uhuru’s signature Stoolen, which is made from locally collected scrap wood, the Metal Stoolen was born from scrap material in the Uhuru metal shop. Every process creates some kind of scrap; the key is to find a product that can utilize the increasingly small pieces that result. In this case, the scraps were leftover lengths of steel that were too short to be used in furniture production. Improvising in the shop one day, the Uhuru designers discovered that, when cut down to the same length and grouped haphazardly, the scraps produced a dynamic pattern filled with what the Japanese call “empty space”—negative space that is as important as the solid materials themselves. The bright powder coating protects the metal and highlights the relationship between the object and the empty space that surrounds it. Custom colors are available for powder coated steel frame. All our items are hand built to order in Red hook, Brooklyn and available in custom sizes and finishes. Currently in the showroom.
