This playful but sophisticated coat rack was the result of a domestic argument. We were out of closet space, and the coats were overflowing. But we had an aversion to wall hooks - empty and unattractive many months out of the year. We created the Symbol, a practical object we're happy to look at year-round. During the coatless summer months the Symbol hangs as a purely aesthetic piece, as the hooks lay flat and belie their function. When needed, the hooks pull smoothly out to help you organize your stuff. Available in monochrome or color. Monochrome has an anodized aluminum finish for both the housing and the hooks. Color has white housing and vibrant color anodized hooks. Currently in the showroom.

This shelf was unveiled at ICFF 08. It is based on Conceal shelf concept where the supporting structure is hidden within it. Z shelf is a more decorative version with aluminum strip running between the book stacks in zigzag fashion. This strip is not touching the wall, so even though it is clearly supporting the books it is still a mystery how the strip itself is held in place on the wall. Currently in the showroom.

VersaRoom is a modular system for easily building private spaces within larger common spaces. The entire system is easily assembled and disassembled in a couple of hours with basic tools. These cork bowls and dishes were inspired by the traditional drinking vessel used by cork harvesters to stay hydrated in the hot, arid forests where cork trees grow. Bacia Grande is made completely from the waste material of bottle-stopper production. At over 60cm in diameter, it is a single-piece cork vessel on a dramatic scale. After several generations of re-constitution, cork maintains a tactile presence and warmth in the hand. I am fascinated by the fact that while the material is wholly ecological, it is above all a seductive and luxurious material, green or otherwise. Currently in the showroom.

The Refill Pillow reimagines the pillow as a modular acoustic system—individually thrown on a couch, or panelized to subdivide a room. Constructed from woven translucent fabrics and filled with felt pellets, visual translucency is united with acoustic absorption. The zipper perimeter allows multiple pillows to be joined together end-to-end and top-to-bottom, while zipper access to each pocket allows a variable amount of fill. An optional grommet edge allows the pillows to be hung from traditional curtain tracks. The asymmetrical pocket sizes create a resonating pattern as more pillows are joined together. Background story: When DESU's product development intern, Elizabeth Cordes approached principal designer David Scott with her idea for a bottomless bowl, she expected him to be a bit put off. As it turned out, Scott was not only open to the idea, but had independently experimented the concept in the past. Great minds think alike and so Cordes got to work, and the HUG was born. The Japan Series Panels are a set of two book matched panels inspired by a 16th century Japanese Spring Kimono textile. Depicted is a male and female Chinese Phoenix flying among the Cherry tree blossoms. This mythical bird represented high virtue and grace. It was believed to appear very rarely, and only to mark the beginning of a new era. Time is an unlimited line. It never stops or goes back. It just keeps going forward. As the morning comes after the night everyday, it almost looks turning back as a Mobius strip which seems that it has two different surfaces but it is one infinite surface. This bunch of strip is supposed to be read as one continuous Mobius strip. The birch wood side indicates day time and black painted side indicates night time. By twisting in the middle of a strip, it shows that day time is disappearing and night is coming. To make that gradation more graphic, I used different thickness of lines at irregular intervals. The whole form has three different elements to represent “time”; line, point and volume. Currently in the showroom.
